Here we go! - for both Hershbergers and Ho(ch)-stetlers (rev)

As it turns out, both the Hershberger and Hostetler sides of the family are related to a single Jacob Hochstetler (and his wife) who immigrated to the US with his wife and 2 children in 1738. (Read all about it here:
http://www.hostetler.net/origins/fdescend2.cfm
My siblings and I are descended from Jacob's two children who were not kidnapped/killed by the Indians. (Descended from 5 of John's children and 3 of Barbara's children, so this is an important family in our line!)

Lizzie Miller Hostetler's family was in the area at the time, too. Here is the recounting from a booklet published by that side of the family:
The experience of a neighboring Amish family that same night, have [sic] very important implications to the history of our Ancestor. Shortly before dawn, John Miller Sr. (Hannes in German) was chopping wood near his cabin, and as the Indians were returning after having completed their mission at the Hochstetler home, heard him, and as he lifted the ax, a Frenchman accompanying the Indian party, took aim, and the bullet hit the head of the ax in mid air, glanced off and hit Johns [sic] hand, but inflicted no further injury. John immediately ran in the cabin for protection, however the Indians left without further assaulting the Miller home. In the cabin were Johns [sic] wife and small children. Family Record of Jacob M. and Barbara (Coblentz) Miller 1861-1991, compiled by Sarah Mae Miller
After reading up on the family, you might like to check out John Hochstetler's reconstructed cabin by visiting the web cam http://www.garden-place.com/JLH/page1.html The cabin is now located in Maryland, so you can check the weather there, too!

Finally for this article, if you want to check out your line beginning with "Jonas A. Hostetler" in James C. Hostetler's database at http://www.omii.org/omii.htm, you will need to enter:
Jonas Hochstetler
We'll see if the direct link to Jonas A. Hostetler's family will work: http://208.1.0.27:2317/hostetlr?lang=en;i=4572. Good -- it does work.
You can begin with other names, of course -- possibly even your own. [This is a large database, but I don't know what years it includes (how current it is). If you poke around on that site, you'll see the list of his sources http://www.omii.org/jch.htm. The most recent publication cited is from 1999, I think. I wouldn't expect a 6 or 7-year old to be checking out his family history on that site, but then, you never know!]

I guess I'd better quit modifying this article and get on with the next one!

You may moderate the coments to let us ask personal questions. just change it in the same tabs where you change the word verification. We are lazy and can save a step by asking the questions in your comment and then you can choose to let them be posted or not. rather than think about the questions then email you about them...

OK, we'll try it that way.
