Jacob Hertzler in Person

The mode of Jacob Hertzler’s dressing was the Amish Mennonite mode, low pants, round cut coat with standing collar and hooks and eyes, and low, broad brimmed hat. He wore a long beard, was tall and slender in stature, forehead very bald, wore a knit woolen cap on his head to keep it warm in winter, was very sociable and talkative, and used strongly the Swiss dialect, positive in his opinions, stout and healthy in old age. At eighty years old he walked from Hamburg, Berks Co., to Whiteland T., Chester Co., [ed. note: said to be a distance of about 40 miles] in two days, to visit his friends, in preference to riding on horse back.. . . .

John Hertzler, Sr. A brief biographic memorial of Jacob Hertzler and a complete genealogical family register of his lineal descendants and those related by inter-marriage : from 1730 to 1883, chronologically arranged : together with the necessary historical and other notes : also, an appendix of the Christian Zug family, Elkhart, Ind.: Mennonite Pub. Co., 1885, p. 332.

From one of the pages on Jacob Hertzler in the Hostetler Database comes this information: "Jacob was reported to be ‘a man of almost limitless energy’ who worked long hours on his farm and travelled extensively for his preaching duties.”
