Christian Stutzman's family background

We know a bit about Barbara Hochstetler’s family. What about Christian Stutzman?

Our Stutzman family came from Spiez near Lake Thun, Switzerland. . . .

From the landing records at Philadelphia, Pa., we learn that Johan Jacob Stutzman arrived Oct. 2, 1727, on ship Adventure, Capt. John Davies, from Rotterdam, last from Plymouth, England.

Dr. R.H. Stutzman . . . writes that Johan Jacob Stutzman, according to the traditions handed down, from generation to generation in his family, on his voyage to America, lost his wife and all his children, except two sons Jacob and Christian. Not having money enough to pay his passage “he bound out his sons as indentured servants to pay therefor.” He then returned to the Old Country. Possibly Capt. John Davies who under the circumstances would naturally take a deep and kindly interest in the stricken family may have helped in the discussion of plans and opened the way for collecting the debt due him and carry out the father’s natural longing for his old home and friends, leaving his sons in the care of his fellow church members of the Amish faith. That his sons were under 16 years is shown by the fact their names were not reported, under the law that the Captain must report the names of all male passengers over 16 years. These sons later appear among the Amish in Bern Tp., Berks Co., Pa.

We assume that the father of our Christian Stutzman was Jacob, the older son of Johan Jacob, the immigrant of Oct. 2, 1727, as he was the first that asked for land. The Hertzler Gen., generally a good authority, in footnote on page 426 states that our Christian was a son of Johan Jacob, the immigrant. We assume he was a grandson of that man.

NOTE: the Hostetler database gives the name of this Christian Stutzman’s father as “John.” I don’t know if there’s a contradiction here or if the father used both names. I have not checked this out myself. I did find a list of the passengers of that ship of that date with Johann Jacob Stutzman listed.
