More on Jacob Hertzler

There are other warrants mentioned, too, for Jacob Hertzler. He was an industrious settler.

Also a warrant granted Oct. 13th, 1752, for 110 acres, 130 perches; a warrant granted Aug. 5th, 1765, for 36 acres, 36 perches; a warrant granted Dec. 2d, 1766, for 44 acres, 95 perches; and a warrant granted June 23d, 1773, for 30 acres, 33 perches. These several contiguous tracts in the whole contained 404 acres, and 4 perches, and an allowance of six per cent. [sic] for roads, all set with timber in a wilderness, which he improved.

On August the 30th, 1773, Jacob Hertzler divided his land between his children. John received the farm near Moortown, in Centre T., Berks Co., Pa.; his son Jacob received 190 acres of the home farm; his son Christian received 169 acres of the home farm; his daughter Fanny, married to John Kauffman, received the residue of the home farm, with some more land joining by purchase.

Catharine Hertzler died between August 30th, 1773, and March 4th, 1774. Jacob Hertzler died in 1786, some time after March 20th. They are both buried in the Amish Congregation Burying- ground, two miles west of Hamburg, joining the home farm. There are no tombstones to mark the graves where our progenitors lie.

John Hertzler, A brief biographic memorial of Jacob Hertzler and a complete genealogical family register of his lineal descendants and those related by inter-marriage : from 1730 to 1883, chronologically arranged : together with the necessary historical and other notes : also, an appendix of the Christian Zug family, Elkhart, Ind.: Mennonite Pub. Co., 1885, 384 pgs.

In mention of dividing up the property, this omission of his daughter, Catherine, who was married to John Hochstetler, makes me wonder again if we have the right family. Again, according to information in databases at the Swiss Anabaptist Association, she is the daughter of this Jacob Hertzler. It will be interesting to see if I can verify this elsewhere.

By the way, we are hitting the road soon for some R&R and, hopefully, some genealogy research, on the way to the reunion. So this blog is probably taking a vacation until we return. Hope to see you there!
P.S. I’ll have a bit more to share about Jacob Hertzler, so stay tuned.
