My paternal great grandfather, Emanuel G. Hershberger, son of the late Gabriel and Mattie (Weaver) Hershberger, was born Sept. 8, 1854, near Walnut Creek, Holmes Co., Ohio, and died at his home Sunday, Feb. 3, 1942. Aged 87 years and 4 months.
He was united in marriage to Nancy (Miller) Hershberger, deceased Dec. 31, 1876 and lived in matrimony 63 years, 6 months and 7 days. She preceded him to the Great Beyond July 7, 1940. He lived as a widower 1 year and 7 months.
Five sons and four daughters are left to mourn his departure, namely Jacob, Joe and Atlee E. of Uniontown, Ohio; Eli E., (Mattie) Mrs. Sam Hershberger of Mt. Hope; Dan E., (Sadie) Mrs. Ben P. Miller, (Susie) Mrs. Dan I. Hershberger, and (Ida) Mrs. Dan J.B. Miller all of near Walnut Creek, Ohio. Also 48 grandchildren, and 44 great grandchildren survive, besides many other friends and relatives.
The cause of his death was dropsy, weak heart and old age. Being unable to rest otherwise, he sat on a rocking chair the last few months of his life. He was unconscious the last few days and did much suffering until death called him to the Great Beyond.
Being a member of the Amish Mennonite church, he remained faithful to the end.
Besides his wife, all his brothers and sisters, parents, and 1 daughter preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the home, conducted by Bishop Dan N. Miller and Ben E. Weaver. A large concourse of friends and relatives attended to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one.
Interment was made in the family cemetery where he was laid to rest beside his companion.
Mary Hershberger
